Martinborough saved the best for last to topple defending champions Carterton 4/2 in a pulsating Regional One final on Saturday.
On the back of a dominant semi-final victory over Masterton, Martinborough made the perfect start with polished singles wins to Matt Nicholson and Marco De Groot.
Carterton’s Karen Goodall attempted to rescue the situation for her team but after securing the first set, she was overrun by the fast-finishing Carla Didsbury to give the Southern team a decisive 3-0 advantage.
Matt Spooner pulled one back for Carterton with a grafting win over Chris Wilkie at the top of the order to keep Carterton in the hunt, but having accrued a significant games advantage Martinborough only needed to capture a single set in the doubles to claim the title.
Matt & Cory Spooner ensured the fixture would go down to the wire by winning the men’s doubles in straight sets, but Martinborough were not going to be denied with De Groot & Didsbury putting the icing on the cake with a tight victory in the mixed doubles.
It has been several years since Martinborough have hoisted the Gawith Shield and based on this performance they look a good chance to add to their tally next season.
